Key Feature
End the epidemics of AIDs, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis
Aims to reduce the impact of communicable diseases with a focus on long-term diseases with the largest burden.
AIDS
-Caused by HIV
-Damages and weakens immune system
-Higher risk of developing cancers and tb
AIDS Transmission
-HIV transmitted vie exchange of bodily fluids
-HIV can pass from an infected mother to a child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding
AIDS Cure
No cure, ART can delay
ACTIONS TO REACH KF 2 (AIDS EPIDEMIC)
-Promote gender equality
-Invest in healthcare services to enable diagnosis and access to ART treatment
-Increase knowledge and understanding about HIV and AIDS
-Fund research and development into finding vaccine
-Remove barriers of discrimination
-Increase access to, and the use of, condoms
Malaria
-Caused by parasites that are transmitted to people bitten by infected female mosquitoes
-Most at risk are young kids and pregnant women
Controlling malaria/cure
-Eradicate mosquitoes
-Treat infected through ACT
-Antimalarial medicines
WHY is it a KF (MALARIA)
-Unlikely to achieve by 2030
-Malaria is increasing
Actions to reach KF 2 (Malaria)
-Access to clean water and sanitation
-Funding health care services and health professionals
-More access to the indoor spraying of homes
-More effective medicines
-Expand the trial vaccination program
Tuberculosis
-Affects lungs
-Highly contagious
-Can spread through air by coughing and sneezing
-HIV are at higher risk of TB
Why is it a KF (TB)
-Not on track to end the TB epidemic
-Nearly all cases can be prevented and cured
-Top 5 causes for women ages 14-44 in LIC and MICs
Actions to end KF2 (TB)
-Provide universal health coverage
-Increased funding for health and wellbeing services and trained health workers
-Funding for development of new and better ways to diagnose TB and develop resistant drugs and vaccines
-Access to clean water and sanitation
Neglected tropical diseases
-20 diseases and conditions that occur in tropical and subtropical environments
-Caused by a variety of pathogens
Examples of Tropical Diseases
-Dengue virus
-Scabies
-Buruli Ulcer
At risk of Tropical diseases
-Those who lack access to clean water and sanitation
-Those with limited access to health services
-Those who live in close contact to animals
-Those in contact with infectious vectors (Mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, etc)
WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE MOST AT RISK (Women who collect water, children with no safe water to drink or bath, young kids don’t have fully developed immune systems)
Why is it a kf (Tropical diseases)
-Causes severe pain and permanent disability
-Significant impact of HW and HD
Actions to end NTDS (Neglected tropical diseases)
-Development of new forms of insecticides
-Access to clean water and sanitation
-New safe effective drugs that can prevent and treat infections
Hepatitis
-Types A,B,C,D,E
-Inflammation in liver caused by viral infection
-Five types that have greatest potential for outbreaks
-Five types contribute to BOD
Hepatitis A and E (food and water borne infections)
-More likely to occur in communities with contaminated water and poor sanitation
-SYMPTOMS: Nausea, vomiting
CAN BE PREVENTED THROUGH IMPROVED SANITATION, HYGIENE, AND FOOD SUPPLY, AND VACCINES
Hepatitis B and C (Blood borne infections)
-Transmitted through unsafe injections and medical procedures, as well as occasionally intimate contact
-Hepatitis B can transfer from mothers to babies at birth
-Hepatitis B and C are the most common cause of liver cancer
Hepatitis D (blood borne)
Transmitted through contact with infected blood and only occurs in people who are already infected with Hep B
Why its a kf (Hepatitis)
-Growing cause of death
-Many people die from hepatitis every day
Actions to end KF 2 (Hepatitis)
-Expansion of hepatitis C prevention programs
-Access to clean water and sanitation
-Universal health coverage
-Large scale vaccination programs
-Safe practices in healthcare settings
