Homeostasis
The body's method of regulating body temperature and keeping internal conditions stable and balanced despite external conditions, ensuring the body functions properly.
Hypothalamus
The specific region in the brain responsible for running the automated process of homeostasis using positive and negative feedback.
Positive Feedback
A mechanism in which the body ensures an event happens or continues to happen as quickly as possible until the issue is resolved or stopped.
Blood Clotting
An example of positive feedback where platelets and clotting agents travel to an open wound with continuous reinforcement until the bleeding stops.
Negative Feedback
A process where the body senses an internal change (often triggered by external factors) and works to counteract or reverse that change.
Body Temperature Regulation
An example of negative feedback where the body sweats to cool down when too hot, and shivers to warm up when too cold.
Heat Stroke
An illness resulting from improper or compromised homeostasis where the body must adjust its processes to reduce heat via radiation, convection, and sweating.
