Virginia 1607

Colony created to rival Spain and create base for trade. Almost failed, succeeded after tobacco was grown which allowed finance to support the economy.

Massachusetts 1620

Colony founded by puritans fleeing James I. Sought freedom of worship.

New York

Many new American colonies were founded as a result of war, New York was captured from Holland in Dutch War 1664 - 1667, named after James, Duke of York, brother of Charles II.

Expansion of the 13 British Colonies

1756 - 1763 Seven Years War in America saw Britain defeat France (Quebec captured), led to expansion of the 13 British Colonies, also encouraged their independence

Was fought in India between Britain and its Indian supporters and France and its Indian supporters. Britain won, expelling France and in the following 100 years came to dominate India

Saw Britain become the dominant trading nation between India and Europe. This was the basis for territorial power in India
