DNA sequencing
A method that allows the nucleotide base sequence of an organism's genetic material to be identified.
Chain termination method
A DNA sequencing technique developed by Frederick Sanger, also known as Sanger sequencing, that uses dideoxynucleotides to terminate DNA strand extension.
Dideoxynucleotides
Modified nucleotides used in the chain termination method that have a slightly different structure from standard deoxynucleotides.
Template strand
A strand of DNA that serves as the pattern for the assembly of a complementary strand.
High-throughput sequencing
A term for multiple DNA sequencing technologies that allow for the simultaneous sequencing of many DNA strands quickly.
Gel electrophoresis
A technique used to separate DNA strands based on length, with shorter strands traveling further in a gel.
Single-stranded template
The form of DNA that is used as the template for sequencing during the chain termination method.
Next-generation sequencing
The latest high-throughput sequencing methods that do not require electrophoresis, such as nanopore sequencing and pyrosequencing.
Evolutionary biology
A field of study that uses sequencing methods to understand evolutionary relationships among organisms.
Personalised medicine
A medical approach that uses genetic sequencing to tailor treatments to individual patients.
