Phoneme
Smallest unit of sound.
Phonological Awareness
Understanding the internal linguistic structure of words.
Sound Symbol Correspondences
Knowing the various sounds and their correspondence to the letters or combinations of letters that make those sounds.
Syllable
A unit of oral or written language with one vowel sound.
Closed Syllable
A type of syllable that ends in a consonant where the vowel is generally short.
Open Syllable
A type of syllable that ends in a vowel where the vowel is generally long.
Vowel + Consonant + e Syllable
A type of syllable that has a long vowel and ends with a silent e.
Vowel Team Syllable
A type of syllable spelled with two vowels next to each other.
R-controlled Syllable
A type of syllable that has a vowel followed by the letter r, where the letter r affects the vowel sound.
Consonant + le Syllable
A type of syllable that has a consonant followed by le at the end of the word, making the final syllable.
Morphology
How base words, roots, and affixes are connected to form words.
Syntax
Set of principles that dictate the sequence and function or words in a sentence in order to convey meaning.

Aspect of language concerned with meaning.
