Polarity
Determined by the electronegativity difference of atoms comprising molecule.
Polar molecule
Reflects a high electronegativity difference between the atoms forming the covalent bonds in a molecule.
Nonpolar Molecule
Reflects little to no electronegativity difference between the atoms forming a molecule and therefore the equal sharing of the electrons between the atoms forming the covalent bonds
Hydrophilicity/Hydrophobicity
The tendency of a substance to interact with water (hydrophilicity) or to repel water (hydrophobicity), influencing solubility and molecular behavior in aqueous environments.
Intermolecular Bond
Weak bonds formed between individual molecules. 2 important intermolecular bonds to be on the lookout for today include hydrogen and ionic bonding.
Hydrogen Bonds
Requires a hydrogen donor and hydrogen acceptor
Ionic bonds
Intermolecular bond between molecules containing ions of opposite charge
