Behaviors of Real Concern (BORCs)
Behavior that is "getting in our way," which can be internalizing or externalizing, and informs goals, theoretical approaches, interventions, and taught strategies.
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
A framework in school counseling programs that is purposeful, preventative, responsive, and provides support across all tiers.
Solution Focused Counseling Key Aspects
A counseling approach centered on five key principles: problems can be solved, motivation is key, exceptions can be found, goals must be defined, and focus should be on behavior before connecting to thoughts and feelings.
Stage 1 of Solution Focused Counseling: Understand the Problem
The stage focused on exploring when the problem started, when it is more or less present, its effects on life, and potential beneficial solutions.
Stage 2 of Solution Focused Counseling: Goal Setting
The stage where counselors use SMART goals, 1-to-10 goal scales, and questions like the miracle question to establish desired outcomes and outline next steps.
Stage 3 of Solution Focused Counseling: Finding Exceptions
The stage aimed at helping students identify times when the problem did not exist or was successfully controlled, exploring what helped during those moments.
Miracle Question
A specific goal-setting question technique used in Solution Focused Counseling to help students envision how their situation would be different once the problem is solved.
Goal Scales (1-10)
A tool used in Solution Focused Counseling where students rate their current status and target goal on a scale of 1 to 10, describe each rating, and identify the next step.
Solution Focused Consultation & Collaboration
An approach to collaborating with teachers or families that involves asking when the student last demonstrated expected behavior, scale ratings of behavior frequency, and student characteristics for positive change.
