What is biodiversity?

The measure of different species in a given area

What is an endemic species?

A unique species that is only found in one ecosystem/area

Why should areas like rainforests and savannahs with endemic species be protected?

To avoid exploitation

How do ecosystems provide key services?

They provide resources for humans to use - eg clean air, food and water

Tropical rainforest key services - regulating air quality and climate

Rainforests recycle large quantities of water and take in large quantities of carbon dioxide meaning lots of oxygen is produced

Provides wood, fuel, natural medicines and fresh water

The Amazon makes 50% of its own rainfall

Nutrients are recycled as trees provide shelter which stops rainfall from washing them away

Provides food, materials and Wildlife attracts tourism which is beneficial
