Burn scar
land that was previously burned and damaged by a forest fire
Components
The parts that make up something
Interactions
How parts work together or affect each other
Systems
Groups of parts that work together as a whole
Scale
The size or level of something
Fuel
something with a lot of energy in it that can burn
Peat
A soft, brown material made from dead plants that build up in wet ground over time
Energy
The power that makes things move, grow, or change. Can be released from burning fuel or come from sunlight (energy flows)
Matter
Anything that takes up space and has weight, like solids, liquids, and gases. (matter cycles)
Permafrost
Ground that stays frozen all year long, usually found in very cold places.
Decomposers
recycle nutrients from dead plant or animal matter back to the soil (land based ecosystems) or the water (aquatic ecosystems)
Independent Variable
The factor in an experiment that the scientist changes on purpose to test its effects
Dependent Variable
The factor in an experiment that is measured or observed; it changes in response to the independent variable.
Constant
Any part of an experiment that is kept the same throughout to ensure a fair test.
Cellular respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy (ATP)
Carbon Sink
Is a large store of carbon (energy/matter) that is keeping it out of the atmosphere. (Peat)
Bonds
connections between atoms that form molecules
Chemical reactions
process by which bonds in molecules are rearranged and energy is transferred.
Aerobic
Processes that require oxygen.
Anaerobic
Processes that do not require oxygen.
