What is the nervous system?
The nervous system is the body’s communication system that connects the brain with all body parts. It sends messages using electrical signals
Why is the nervous system important?
It allows the body to receive information, process information and respond to changes in the environment
How does the brain communicate with the body?
Through electrical impulses that travel along neurons (nerve cells)
What are the two main divisions of the nervous system?
The Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What does the Central Nervous System (CNS) consist of?
Brain and spinal cord
What are the three main functions of the CNS?
Receives messages from the body, processes information and sends instructions to the body
What is the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)?
A network of nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body
What is the function of the PNS?
To carry messages from the body > CNS, from CNS > body
What are the two types of neurons in the PNS?
Sensory neurons and motor neurons
