Minimum Tyre Tread Depth
The minimum legal thread depth for tyres is 1.6mm. Driver must also check air pressure and ensure no cracks or bulges are visible.
Single Yellow Line
Indicates that parking is prohibited during business hours.
Double Yellow Line
Indicates that parking is prohibited at any time.
Broken White Line
Indicates that you may overtake if it is safe to do so.
Flashing Red Light
A light signal found exclusively at a level crossing to stop traffic.
Hard Shoulder
A road area reserved for emergencies, breakdowns, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Clearway Sign
Indicates that parking is prohibited during the times shown on the sign.
Zig-Zag Lines
Road markings on the approach to a pedestrian crossing indicating that overtaking is prohibited.
Flashing Amber Light (Pelican Crossing)
Signals drivers to proceed with caution, giving right of way to pedestrians.
Yellow Box Junction Rule
Do not enter the box unless your exit is clear, with one exception: when turning right and not obstructing traffic.
Irish Motorway Speed Limit
The maximum legal speed limit on Irish motorways is 120km/h.
Windscreen Wash Reservoir Cap
The blue cap under the bonnet indicating where windscreen water is added.
Engine Oil Level Check
Park on a level surface, pull out the dipstick, wipe off excess oil with a clean tissue, reinsert, and check that the oil level sits between the minimum and maximum marks.

Hand Signals to a Pointsman and Oncoming Traffic
Manual signals given by drivers or cyclists to communicate turns (right/left), continuing straight, or slowing down/stopping to oncoming traffic or traffic control officers.

Hand Signals to Traffic Behind
Manual signals given to rear traffic indicating intentions to move out or turn right, turn left (arm moved anti-clockwise by car driver), or slow down/stop.

Alternative 80km/h Speed Limit Sign
A white circular sign with a black border and diagonal black stripes used on local roads or where special speed limit bye-laws apply.

Regulatory Road Signs
Upright circular signs with red borders giving mandatory prohibitions, instructions, or speed limits such as Stop, Yield, or Max Speed Limit signs.

Mandatory Signs at Junctions
Blue circular signs with white symbols indicating required directions such as turn left, turn right, keep left, keep right, or pass either side.

Public Transport and Lane Signs
Signs designating bus lanes (with-flow or contra-flow), tram lanes, cycle tracks, and vehicle access restrictions.

Junction and Hazard Warning Signs
Yellow diamond signs with black symbols warning drivers of upcoming road conditions, turns, junctions, or hazards.

Warning Signs for Roadworks
Diamond or rectangular signs with black symbols and borders on an orange background, specifically warning of construction hazards and lane closures.

Motorway Signs
Rectangular blue signs with white writing or symbols indicating motorway entrances, advance directions, distances to exits, and regulations.
