Bipolar II disorder
A disorder that requires a history of at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode.
Hypomanic episode
An episode lasting at least 4 consecutive days involving a clear change in functioning without severe social/occupational impairment or requiring hospitalization.
Bipolar I disorder
A disorder requiring a manic episode that lasts at least 7 days or requires hospitalization.
Cyclothymia
A condition involving chronic, subthreshold mood swings occurring over a period of 2 years.
Unipolar depression
A diagnosis that is ruled out by the presence of a hypomanic episode.
