Plagiarism is:

• Buying essays online

• Stealing someone else’s essay

• Hiring someone to compose your essay

• Careful when paraphrasing

Plagiarism is not citing:

• Words or ideas from songs, ads, newspapers, magazines, books, movies, etc.

• Interviews - phone , in writing, in person

• Audio and Video

• Visuals – images, charts, graphs, pictures

Plagiarism is:

• Copying homework from another student

• Using someone else’s words in a paper without quotation marks

• Looking at another students paper during assessments

• Taking photo of quiz or test and sending to others

LM Penalties for Plagiarism

Minimum Penalty:

• Getting a 0 for the assignment

• Parents & Admin involvement

Additional penalties include but not limited to:

• Jeopardize membership in NHS and/or jeopardize participation in awards

Why do People Plagiarize

• Most common: Procrastination/Poor time management

• Peer pressure (friends have better grades so you cheat to keep up)

• Having pressure of making good grades vs. genuine learning

• Ignorance of academic integrity and consequences of dishonest behavior

• Negative attitude towards assignment (you hate the assignment)

• Don’t understand assignment
