It emphasizes the importance of physical activity and healthy habits to achieve a fulfilling lifestyle.

Key Ideas and Facts

Heart Rate and Fitness

Heart rate is the number of heartbeats per minute. A strong heart requires fewer beats per minute to pump blood. There are three main types of heart rates:

  • Resting heart rate: Indicates baseline fitness level. A healthy adult typically ranges between 60 and 80 beats per minute.

  • Exercise heart rate: Measured during aerobic activity, indicating the intensity of cardiac effort. To improve cardiovascular fitness, heart rate should be maintained between 65% and 90% of the maximum heart rate (MHR), calculated as follows: 220 - your age.

  • Recovery heart rate: Measured one minute after aerobic activity, allows tracking of fitness levels. A decrease of less than 20 beats indicates poor fitness, while a decrease of more than 50 to 60 beats indicates excellent fitness.

Different factors can influence heart rate, including dehydration, caffeine, stress, digestion, ambient temperature, lack of sleep, illness, exercise, and certain medications. Intensity can also be measured through the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE), based on physical sensations experienced during activity.

Components of Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is composed of 11 parts: 6 related to health and 5 related to skills. The 6 health-related components are:

  1. Cardiorespiratory endurance

  2. Muscular strength

  3. Power

  4. Muscular endurance

  5. Flexibility

  6. Body composition

The 5 skill-related components are:

  1. Agility

  2. Balance

  3. Coordination

  4. Reaction time

  5. Speed

Cardiorespiratory endurance is the most important component as it offers numerous health benefits, enabling longer and healthier living. It is defined as the ability to exercise your entire body for extended periods without stopping, developing a strong heart, healthy lungs, and open blood vessels that supply oxygen to your large muscles.

Muscular fitness consists of three health-related parts: muscular strength, muscular endurance, and power, all important for health and performance. Flexibility, often overlooked, is the ability to move your joints through their full range of motion without stiffness or pain. Body composition refers to the relative amount of body fat compared to lean body tissues (muscles, bones, water, skin, blood, organs), with active people having a higher percentage of lean body mass and less body fat.

Components of a Workout Session

Every workout should consist of three phases:

  1. Warm-up: Includes a general warm-up and a specific warm-up, intense enough to gradually elevate heart and breathing rates without causing fatigue. This prepares your body for more vigorous activity.

  2. Workout: Enhancing cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular fitness, utilizing continuous training and interval training methods.

  3. Recovery: Helps restore the body after exertion.

The FITT training principles (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type) help determine the appropriate amount of physical activity.

Changing Lifestyle Behaviors to Improve Well-Being

Well-being is an active process where people become more aware and make choices toward a healthy, fulfilling life. It includes six dimensions:

  • Social

  • Spiritual

  • Physical

  • Emotional

  • Environmental

  • Intellectual

These dimensions are interconnected; positive changes in one area can help progress in another, leading to greater overall health and vitality. Healthy habits such as being active, eating well, managing stress, getting enough sleep, and avoiding harmful addictions are essential for well-being.

Understanding the effects and risks of substances (alcohol, drugs, technology/social media) is crucial. For example,

  • Drinking one glass of water for each alcoholic beverage can help mitigate negative effects.

  • Regular use of cannabis can harm physical and mental health and may lead to dependence.

Physical activity is key to overall well-being, and it’s essential to understand the factors that influence activity levels, how much activity is needed, and how to get started. Regular physical activity burns calories, which helps manage body weight, and a healthy diet supports this goal.
