Representation in the Media

Representation in the media Paper 2 of the English Language A level focuses on language diversity and change, along with language discourses, so as part of that you could be asked questions about the ways in which ethnic varieties of English are used, viewed and represented; and you could be asked to do a directed writing task about the topic.

Historically, Creoles have been perceived by some as 'broken' or 'incorrect' English, a discourse that persists in the representation of other non-standard forms, dialects, sociolects and ethnolects. MLE has sometimes been referred to as 'Jafaican' (fake Jamaican) and 'ghetto grammar' by non-linguists, and associated with gangs, violence and poor education by others.
