Retribution

For

  • Acts as a deterrence, discourages other offenders to commit the same crimes

  • proportional, so therefore fair “an eye for an eye”

  • makes victims will feel satisfied

Against

  • No reformative aspect

  • could de-sensitise a criminal both mentally and physically

  • criminal loses any feelings of compassion or remorse to society as they harbor a sense of hatred

  • Bible teaches us to not repay evil with evil, so focus on reformation instead

  • Offenders are put of due to the fear or a punishment

  • wise leadership often involves implementing measures to deter wrongdoing, and maintain social order and justice, valued in Christian ethics

  • not fair or proportionate, as it must be harsh to deter people from doing crimes

Reformation

For

  • loving as it allows change of personality from evil to good

  • does not encourage violence

  • helps things such as drug addiction, as offenders are not being put back into prison where they would face these pressures again

Against

  • hard to judge if someone has successfully reformed as is able to re-enter society

  • soft on crime, not being properly punished for a crime like murder - unfair on victims

  • Very expensive
