WWI

Causes for US entry to war- The U.S. joined the war on April 6, 1917. A German submarine sank the Lusitania, killing 128 Americans. Later, German subs also attacked U.S. supply ships headed to help the Allies. Another reason was the Zimmerman Telegram—Germany tried to get Mexico to fight the U.S., but Mexico refused, and one leader, Pancho Villa, actually helped the U.S.

League of Nations- President Woodrow Wilson came up with the idea for the League of Nations to keep peace after the war. But the U.S. Senate rejected it because many Americans didn’t want to be part of a group that could pull them into more wars.

1920s

18th Amendment - Banned alcohol (making, selling, and drinking it).

Jazz- Became super popular in the 1920s. It came from African American musical traditions and became a symbol of freedom and change. It grew especially in places like Harlem and was linked to the Great Migration.

Escapism- People tried to escape their problems with movies, music, and radio shows

Great Migration- Many African Americans moved from the South to the North. They wanted better jobs and to escape racism and unfair treatment.

Great Depression

Stock Market Crash - Oct 1929: People bought stocks on credit. When prices dropped, they couldn’t pay back loans. Farms made too many crops, and prices dropped. Banks and businesses lost money.

Bank failures- Banks loaned out too much money. When the market crashed, people couldn’t pay the banks back. Banks closed, people lost savings, and homes were taken away. {Forecl

Unemployment data-1 out of every 4 people didn’t have a job (25%) Most families had only one income because women didn’t really work

Cycle of Depression- Businesses closed → people lost jobs → people stopped buying things → more businesses closed. It was hard to stop this cycle once it started.

Dust Bowl- In the 1930s, a long drought and poor farming practices caused huge dust storms in the Great Plains. Crops died, farms failed, and many families moved west to find work.

New Deal - President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s plan to fix the Great Depression. It gave people jobs, helped the poor, and made new rules for banks and businesses.

Alphabet soup- Nickname for all the New Deal programs (like SSA, CCC, FDIC) because of all the letters.

New Deal Programs - SSA, FDIC, CCC:

SSA (Social Security Act): Gave money to elderly and disabled.

FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation): Created during the Great Depression to protect people's money in banks. If a bank fails, they make sure you don’t lose your savings (up to a certain amount).

CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps): Gave young men jobs working on environmental projects.

NC in Depression/Blue Ridge Parkway- The government built the Blue Ridge Parkway to give people jobs and bring more tourists to the mountains

End of Depression- The Great Depression officially ended when World War II began. The war created millions of jobs in factories and the military, which finally boosted the economy.
