Unit 1: Chemistry of Life

(this is not a comprehensive summary, its what i personally forgot and im just repeating it now to know what to focus on)

  • Cohesion = hydrogen bonds between molecules

  • Adhesion = water molecules sticking to a surface

  • Dehydration synthesis = adding monomers by removing water

  • Hydrolysis = breaking down polymers by adding water

  • Protein structures:

    • Primary structure = sequence of amino acids

    • Secondary structure = folding amino acids either in alpha-helix shape or beta-plated sheet.

    • Tertiary structure = hydrogen and ionic bonds forming between the side chains (the protein gains a shape)

    • Quaternary structure = multiple polypeptide protein chains creating one large polypeptide (famous example is hemoglobin; this happens only in some proteins)

  • isotomes = Forms of atoms with a different amount of neutrons in the nucleus than the original atom

  • acidic solutions contain many hydrogen ions (H+)

  • basic colution contain many OH
