Module 9 Flashcards

  • Causal attributions = two types -> situational and dispositional attributions

  • Situational attributions = focus on factors external to the person

  • Dispositional attribution = focus on the person themselves and personal qualities

  • Fundamental attribution error = the assumption that people are in control of their own behavior

  • Just world hypothesis = the belief that people get the outcomes they deserve

  • Implicit theories of personalities = interpret the world around us by filling in information with preconceptions

  • Out-group homogeneity effect = bias towards others within a group of other people outside one’s own, favoring one one’s group over another

  • Stereotype threat = occurrence where individuals fear confirming negative stereotypes about their social group, leading to an impact on their performance

  • Actor-Observer bias = attributing one’s own situation in a high favor of self-serving perception

  • Attribution = 1. Locus of Control (External vs. Internal) 2. Stability (Stable vs. Unstable) 3. Control Ability (Controllable vs. Uncontrollable)

  • Diffusion of responsibility = each bystander persuaded that someone else will respond to the emergency
