The Bible’s teaching regarding the origin of man
God took special care in the creation of man
God breathed in man's body the breath of life and man became living
God created man as a unity of body and soul
Physical and spiritual unity
The separation of the two is only due to sin
Physical aspects: body, flesh, dust, bones, house of clay
Spiritual aspects: soul, spirit, heart, and mind
The broader and narrower senses of what it means for man(humans) to be made in the image of God
Imageness in a Broad Sense
Humans are:
Spiritual beings
Self conscious
Self determined
Capable of reason
Capable of making ethical decisions
Capable of emotion
Capable of aesthetic judgment
Imageness in a Narrow Sense: Lost due to sin
God created humans
Truly Holy
Truly Righteous
With a true knowledge of God, self, and reality
Difference between broad and narrow sense: explains the difference between before the fall into sin and after the fall into sin
The egalitarian and complementarian perspectives on gender roles
Egalitarian Perspective: men and women are equal in worth and are called to serve in any role based on their gifting and calling, rather than their gender
Complementarian Perspective: men and women are equal in worth but have distinct complementary roles in the church and family, women are typically not permitted to hold certain roles because they are reserved for men.
God’s covenant with Adam
God justly required Adam to have perfect obedience. This was the obligation of the covenant with God
As a test God commanded Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
The consequences of Adam’s sin
The Penalty: Curse was death (physical, spiritual, eternal)
The Promise: Blessing was life (physical, spiritual, eternal - only coming to Adam if the test was passed
The effects of sin
Shame/Separation between man and women, man and God, creation and man
Fear/Separation of man from himself
Original Sin: in Adam every human being sinned
Every human is by nature sinful
Human Guilt: sinful nature makes us truly guilty before God
Commission: doing wrong
Omission: failing to do right
Every human is blind/deaf to spiritual truths
Humans are slaves to sin
Referred in the Bible as children of the Devil
People are spiritually dead, unable to come to Christ
People die physically
Unless a person trusts in god they will also die eternally
Objections to God’s sovereignty and the problem of evil
Gods control: everything happens according to God's plan
God's Authority: all of His commands ought to be obeyed
God's Presence: we cannot escape God's justice and love
Objection, If God controls all things, were merely puppets/robots
The Bible affirms sovereignty and free will
Objection, If God is sovereign over all things, how can he hold people responsible for their sin
God determines what is fair, our concept of fairness should align with his
Objetcion, if God decides everything, he is the author of sin
Sin isn't a physical thing, it arose from rebellion not God, God understands things men don’t
The Problem of Evil: the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil and suffering with omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient God. If God existed he would be powerful enough to prevent evil, and good enough to want to . Since there is evil, He cannot exist.
The Logical Argument
A perfectly powerful being can prevent any evil
A perfectly good being will prevent evil as far as he can
God is perfectly powerful and good
If a perfectly powerful and good God exists, there will be no evil
There is evil
Therefore there is no God
