Physical Science - Chapter 14

Energy

14A Classifying Energy

  • Energy

    • Energy: the ability to do work

    • Kinetic Energy: energy that an object possesses due to its motion

    • Potential Energy: stored energy that can be used later

14B Energy Changes

  • Mechanical Energy: the sum of the kinetic energy and all the forms of potential in a system

14C Energy Resources

  • Renewable Energy Resource: an energy resource that is easily replaced by natural methods

  • Nonrenewable Energy: an energy resource that is not replaced naturally

  • Fossil Fuel: a fuel that has formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived in the past, including coal, petroleum oil, and natural gas

  • Nuclear Energy: energy produced by nuclear reactions

  • Renewable Energy Resources:

    • Biomass Energy: chemical potential energy obtained from renewable organic materials

    • Hydroelectric Energy:electric energy generated by the movement of water

    • Geothermal Energy: energy derived from the heat in the interior of the earth

    • Solar Energy: energy produced by the sun

    • Tidal energy: mechanical energy in rising and falling tides

    • Wind Energy: energy from the wind can be used to turn turbine blades that are attached to generators
