science Untitled Flashcards Set

skeletal system- organ system that supports and
protects the body and allows it to move (with help from the muscular system).
endoskeleton- is a skeleton inside the body
exoskeleton- is a skeleton on the outside of the body
axial skeleton- includes the skull, vertebrae, and ribs,
which support and protect the internal organs.
appendicular skeleton- includes the arms, legs, shoulders,
and pelvis
ligament- is the tough, flexible strand of
connective tissue that holds bones together
cartilage-is a strong, flexible, and smooth
connective tissue found at the end of bones that allows them to move smoothly
compact bone- the hard outer layer of bone, that stores minerals such as calcium
spongy bone- provides most of the strength and
support for the bone, it has many open spaces
marrow(red and yellow)- is a soft tissue at the center of
bones.
Red marrow makes red and white blood cells.
Yellow marrow stores fat.
collagen-
is a protein in the connective tissue that allows bones to have some flexibility
growth plate-are locations where long bones
lengthen
joint (fixed and movable)fixed means does not move, example the joints in your skull and movable are joints that allow movement.
-ball and socket- allow one of the bones to rotate in
a large circle(shoulder and hip)
-hinge- allow bones to move back and forth (elbow and knee)
-gliding- allow flexibility in the wrist and
ankles.
