Bone Anatomy
proximal epiphysis: attaches to trunk, joint point
distal epiphysis: farther from trunk
diaphysis: middle area of long bone
periosteum: layer of tissue that covers the outside of the long bone
endosteum: layer of cells covering the inside of the medullary cavity
compact/cortical bone: tough bone that is on the diaphysis
spongy/trabecular bone: bone that is on the epiphysis
red marrow: white blood cell filled marrow, in epiphysis
yellow marrow: fatty bone marrow in diaphysis
medullary cavity: open space in the diaphysis
articular cartilage: cartilage coating the epiphysis
central canal: main canal in an osteon, has blood vessels running through it
perforating canal: smaller canals that connect vessels and nerves
osteon: cylindrical unit of bone
lamellae: concentric layers that make up osteons
lacunae: Chambers for bone cells
osteocyte: bone cell, found in lacunae
canaliculi: channels that connect lacunae
