Lesson 6: Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates
: carbo “carbon,” hydra “water,” C(H2O)

  • primary energy source, part of cell membrane (glycogen) for cell to cell recognition

Monomer
: simple building block (e.g. monosaccharides)

Monosaccharides

: mono “one,” saccha “sugar”

  • single sugars made up from 3-7 carbon atoms

Isomer

: same formula, different structure

Disaccharides

: two monosaccharides bonded together by a glycosidic linkage (type of bond)

  • a form of condensation

    • can also break down in hydrolysis

Polysaccharides

: three or more monosaccharides bonded together by glycosidic linkages
