ALOPECIA


  • loss of hair


BRUDZINSKI’S SIGN


  • flexion of the hips and knees in response to passive flexion of the neck (a positive brudzinski’s sign) signals meningeal irritation


BUFFALO HUMP


  • accumulation of fat on the back of the neck


BUTTERFLY RASH


  • erythematous, scaling eruption of both cheeks joined by a narrow band of rash across the nose


CARPOPEDAL SPASM (TROUSSEAU’S SIGN)


  • contraction of the fingers and hand elicited by applying a blood pressure cuff on the upper arm for 1-5 minutes; a sign of tetany


CHVOSTEK’S SIGN

 

  • abnormal spasm of the facial muscles that’s elicited by lightly tapping the patient’s facial nerve near gus lower jaw

  • this sign usually suggests hypocalcemia


CYANOSIS


  • bluish or bluish black discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, results from excessive concentration of unoxygenated hemoglobin in the blood


DIPLOPIA 


  • double vision

  • seeing one object as 2


DYSPEPSIA


  • feeling of fullness or indigestion


EXOPHTHALMOS (PROPTOSIS)


  • abnormal protrusion of one or both eyeballs


FATIGUE


  • lack of energy

  • due to decreased oxygen carrying capacity of the blood


HALO VISION (HALOS)


  • seeing rainbow-like, colored rings around lights or bright objects


HOARSENESS


  • rough or harsh sound to the voice

  • sign of laryngeal cancer


JAUNDICE (ICTERUS)


  • yellow discoloration of the skin or mucous membranes, indicating excessive level of conjugated or unconjugated bilirubin in the blood

  • usually seen in the sclera


MURMURS


  • auscultatory sounds heard within the heart chambers major arteries


NYCTALOPIA


  • night blindness


NYSTAGMUS


  • jerky movement of the eyes

  • horizontal nystagmus

  • vertical nystagmus

  • rotary nystagmus


ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION


  • abnormal or delayed response to shifts in the body’s fluid balance on standing


POSTURAL HYPOTENSION


  • patient’s blood pressure drops 15-20 mm Hg or more when he rises from a supine to a sitting or standing position


PTOSIS


  • excessive drooping of the upper eyelid; or “weak eyes”


SETTING-SUN SIGN (SUNSET EYES)


  • eyebrows and eyelids may be drawn upward, exposing the sclera above the iris leading to inability to gaze upward


TINNITUS


  • ringing in the ears

  • sizzling, buzzing, seashell sound


TRISMUS 


  • lockjaw

  • prolonges and partial tonic spasm of the masticatory jaw muscles

  • early sign of tetanus


TUNNEL VISION


  • gunbarrel vision, tubular vision

  • loss of peripheral vision


URINARY INCONTINENCE


  • uncontrollable passage of urine

  • results from either bladder abnormalities of neurologic disorders


VERTIGO


  • illusion of movement in which the patient feels that he’s revolving in space (subjective vertigo) or that his surroundings are revolving around him (objective vertigo)

  • cranial nerve 8 is affected


XEROSTOMIA


  • decreased saliva

  • dryness of the mouth
