Summer Directional terminology
Right: Towards the right side of the body (right ear)
Left: Towards the left side of the body (left ear)
Superior: structure above another (Chin is superior to the navel)
Inferior: Structure below another (navel is inferior to the chin)
Cephalic: closer to the head than another structure (chin is cephalic to the navel)
synonymous with superior
Caudal: closer to the tail than another structure (navel is caudal to the chin)
synonymous with the inferior
Anterior: front of the body (Navel is anterior to the spine)
synonymous with ventral
Posterior: back of the body (spince is posterior to the navel)
synonymous with dorsal
Ventral: towards the body (navel is ventral to the spine)
synonymous to anterior
Dorsal: Towards the back (spine is dorsal to the sternum)
synonymous with posterior
Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment to the body than another structure (elbow is proximal to the wrist)
Distal: Farther from the point of attachment to the body than another structure (wrist is distal to the elbow)
Lateral: away from the midline of the body (nipple is lateral to the sternum)
Medial: towards the midline of the body (bridge of the nose is medial to the eye)
Superficial: towards or on the surface (skin is superficial to muscle)
Deep: away from the surface/internal (lungs are deep to the ribs)
