needle clamp- holds needle in place
presser foot- holds fabric in place while stitching

spool pin- holds the top thread
stitch length control-adjusts length of stitches

stop motion screw- when loosened it stops movement of the needle.

fabric not moving when stitching - fabric is too thick or beginning too close to edge
thread breaking - tension too tight or needle is incorrectly inserted
missing stitches - needle is bent or material is being pulled
loops on under side - loose top thread
loops on top side - loose bobbin thread or loose tension
fabric puckering - tension too tight or blunt needle
needle not moving - stop motion screw is not set for motion
