224- Conflict Resolution
224- Conflict Resolution
Conflict in Projects
Conflict is inevitable on every project; reflects differing opinions and passion.
Moderate conflict can be healthy, but escalation risks physical confrontation.
Levels of Conflict (1-5)
Level 1 – Information Sharing
: Mild differences; parties exchange views objectively.
Level 2 – Disagreement / Personal Protection
: Each defends preferred approach; still project-focused.
Level 3 – Contest
: Win-lose mindset emerges; priority shifts from project success to personal victory.
Level 4 – Crusade
: Group loyalty overrides project goals; opposing sides stop cooperating.
Level 5 – Fight / Destroy
: Intent to harm; physical violence likely; separation is the only immediate remedy.
Managing Conflict
Apply interpersonal & soft skills early to keep issues at Levels 1–2.
Facilitate negotiation, seek middle ground, and address perspectives before escalation.
If conflict approaches Level 5, separate parties first, then attempt resolution after cooling-off period.
Key exam point: prevent escalation; higher levels become increasingly difficult or impossible to resolve.
