Advanced Math and Numerical Ability

How to Answer the Advanced Mathematics Test

  • Keep track of the time.
  • Answer the easy questions first, then proceed to the more difficult ones.
  • Read word problems carefully and study the possible answers.

Word Problems

  1. Represent the unknown/s, and if possible, use only one variable.
  2. Formulate the working equation/s.
  3. Solve for the unknown/s.
  4. Check your answer by substituting the value in the original equation/s.
  5. Answer the question being asked based on your solutions. Don’t forget the units of measurements, if there are any.

Number

  • Age: Consider the time frames mentioned in the problem.

  • Geometry: It helps to know the formulas used in geometry. Draw implied figures, if necessary, to visualize word problems.

  • Digit: If x represents the tens digit and y represents the units digit of a two-digit number, then the number can be represented as 10x + y. The reverse is 10y + x. The sum of the digits is x + y. A three-digit number is represented by 100x +10y + z, and so on.

  • Money: Total value = value of each item x number of items

  • Mixture: Make a diagram illustrating the information given in the problem. The amounts of substances in both sides of the equation must be the same.

  • Uniform Motion: Apply the formula %%Distance = Rate x Time%%

%%If two objects A and B that start from the same point are going in opposite directions: Total Distance = Distance A + Distance B%%

  • Work: Apply the formula %%Work = Rate x Time%%

%%If a person can do a job in t hours, then his rate is 1/t.%%
