Religious Pluralism

Religious Pluralism:

What is it?

Religious Pluralism means "the coexistence of many religions in a society". Canada is an example of a country that is religiously plural.

Canada

We have a history of immigration and a policy of multiculturalism.

Canada is multicultural because we speak many languages, practice many religions (more than 100), and come from as many as 450 different cultures.

Multicultural: Many Cultures

Multiculturism:

Canada's policy of multiculturalism seeks to define how all Canadians - whatever their ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and religious background -make up the fabric of the nation's identity.

The policy and law that recognizes and supports the diversity of a nation's or province's population

It is our legal right to believe in faith, practice the rituals around that faith, and still maintain a uniquely Canadian identity.

The Four Ground Rules for Living Together

Respect the faith and religion of others:

Catholic Creed=Apostles Creed

Muslim Creed= The Shahada

Jewish Creed=The Shema

All express what they believe to be true (their ultimate reality)

2. There is no neutral stance:

Everyone has a particular stance or perspective. We have certain presuppositions about other religions. Recognize what yours are and how they work to affect the way you view the religion.

3. The truth of other Religions:

For believers, their faith explains how the world looks

4. Accept the importance of religion:

Religion, despite the faults of the followers, provides a wealth of diversity among people. The challenge is to shape harmony and differences.

Saint Pope John Paul II

He was the first pope to introduce the concept of dialogue among religions

Interreligious Dialogue: Dialogue among different religions

Saint Pope John Paul II introduced the four guidelines for entering into dialogue with other faiths:

The Holy Spirit is at work in all major recognized religions

Everyone can achieve salvation no matter what religion or non-religion with which they identify.

Dialogue is part of the church's mission (the word catholic actually means universal)

Every major recognized world religion has a ray of truth who is Jesus Christ, Even if he himself is not present in the faith, his teachings are present.
