BIOC19 Animal Developmental Biology

Introduction to Developmental Biology

Developmental Biology: how an animal develops from a single cell to it’s final form. Looking at a genetic and cellular level.

  1. Changes that govern shifts, how cells proliferate, how they form different layers. How do cells adopt different functional roles and organize themselves?

  2. How do organs develop?

  3. How do disease arise? How development can go wrong.

  4. How do animals evolve? Some things can be more advantageous instead

Principles of conservation: stuff happens a lot in a lot of different organisms. This may be so common because they’re productive or good. Not usually determined by environmental cues, they’re typically more innate.
