Scientific English Final Study Notes and Questions

Write a short paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining the difference between a research article and a review article. Include at least two key characteristics of each type.

A research article presents original research conducted by the authors. It includes a research question, methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. This type of article is considered a primary source because it shows new findings directly from experiments or observations. In contrast, a review article summarizes and analyzes previously published research on a specific topic. It does not present new experimental data but gives an overview of current knowledge and identifies gaps in existing studies. While research articles answer specific questions through data collection, review articles help readers understand the broader context of a research field.

Write a short essay (7-10 sentences) discussing the importance of international treaties in addressing global challenges like climate change. Provide two examples of successful international agreements and their impact.

International treaties play a crucial role in solving global problems like climate change. Since climate change affects the whole world, no single country can solve it alone. Treaties encourage cooperation and shared responsibility among nations. One successful example is the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to below 2°C. Many countries have committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions through this treaty. Another example is the Montreal Protocol, designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out harmful substances. It is considered one of the most successful environmental agreements because the ozone layer is slowly recovering. These treaties show that international cooperation can lead to real environmental improvements. However, countries must continue to work together and meet their commitments to achieve long-term success.

Write a short essay (7-10 sentences) discussing the role of ecosystems in mitigating climate change. Include specific examples such as forests, peatlands, or oceans.

Ecosystems play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Forests store large amounts of carbon in trees and soil, helping reduce CO2 levels. Peatlands, rich in organic material, store more carbon than forests, but when disturbed, they release CO2. Oceans also help by using phytoplankton to absorb CO2, which is stored in the deep sea. Coastal ecosystems like seagrass meadows and mangroves capture carbon and protect against storms. However, human activities such as deforestation and pollution threaten these ecosystems, so protecting them is essential to fight climate change.

Write a short essay (7-10 sentences) discussing the potential impacts of thawing permafrost on the global climate. Include the concepts of methane release, feedback loops, and possible mitigation strategies.

Write a short essay (7-10 sentences) discussing the impacts of global warming on biodiversity and food security. Use specific examples such as sea-level rise, extreme weather events, and habitat loss.

Write a short essay (7-10 sentences) explaining how Arctic fires are linked to climate change. Include specific details about peatlands, permafrost, and feedback loops.

Food Engineering: Improving Food Quality and Safety

I think, food engineering is essential for our future. It helps us produce more food with better nutritional value and it reduces the need for chemicals like pesticides. GMO’s and other engineered foods are heavily tested before they reach the market and also food engineering can solve problems like hunger and malnutrition in poor countries. Traditional farming can’t meet the demands for food especially with a growing population and food engineering can make it possible to grow crops in even harsh climate conditions. We need to balance food engineering and traditional farming because food engineering is not about replacing future, it is about supporting it and making it sure to there is enough to eat for everyone. It is important to regulate and monitor food engineering, if it done responsibly it can benefit everyone.
