Cell Membrane Laab

Part A- Diffusion

diffusion- the movement of molecules from an area of high conc. to an area of low conc. until equilibrium

the potassium permanganate‘s radius expanded = showing simple diffusion

example

diffusion?

perfume bottle opened → odors spreads in room

yes

sugar dropped into water and dissolves throughout

yes

water molecules moving in hose

no

air molecules move by air forcefully blown

no

Part B- Osmosis

osmosis- high conc. to low conc. through a semi permeable membrane in water

molasses in thistle tube until overflow top of bulb→ air remained trap in stem -) bulb covered with semi permeable

Part C- hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic solutions

red onion cells

solution

water

equilibrium

isotonic

tap

cells shrank

hypertonic

salt

cells swelled

hypotonic

distilled

Part D- Filtration

filtration- seperation of molecules through a semipermeable membrane by the application of force

plastic funnel over filter paper, have charcoal water leak through filter paper → only clear water gets through and charcoal separates

→ test for glucose and use Benedict’s solution, if color changes to green yellow or red then glucose present

→ test for starch using Lugol’s iodine solution. if color changes rom blue to black, starch present

-gravity responsible for movement of substances

Part E- Egg Osmosis

initial mass : 75.1

day 1: naked egg in vineger → egg will float (isotonic)

(mass becomes 75.1 grams)

day 2: egg in karo syrup (hypertonic)

(mass becomes 31.1g)

day 3: egg in distilled water (hypotonic)

(mass becomes 76.7g)
