Habitat destruction and degradation

The issues and some solutions:

• Habitat destruction and degradation occcur when the conditions that support a species are altered or eliminated

• This results in species loss and a decline in biodiversity

• Causes:

  • human population growth

  • Climate change

  • Pollution

  • Agriculture

  • Urban development

• Protected areas are a solution we can use to combat a decrease in biodiversity e.g national parks, restricted areas, reserves

• SSSI = Site of specific scientific interest

• Solution: woodland restoration/recreation

  • planting new trees to form a new habitat (takes a long time), this can have an impact on neighbouring habitats, e.g. more predators

• Solution: salt Marsh and mudflat restoration/recreation
