Northwest Ordinance 1787 - established the precedent by which the federal government would be sovereign and expand with the admission of new states and the rules in which new states used to be admitted.
Pendleton Act 1883 - mandates that most positions within the federal government should be awarded based on merit instead of political patronage.
Interstate Commerce Act 1887 - the railroad industry became the first industry subject to federal regulation by a regulatory body. Later amended to regulate other modes of transportation and commerce.

Civil Rights Act 1968-commonly known as the Fair Housing Act, expanded on previous acts, and prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin.
Title IX of Education Act of 1972 - Prohibited gender discrimination in federally subsidized

War Powers Act 1973 - President could send troops overseas to an area where hostilities were imminent only if: notified Congress within 48 hours, withdrew troops within 60-90 days, unless authorized by Congress, & consulted with Congress if troops were to engage in combat. Congress can pass resolution to have troops withdrawn at any time.
Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 - Bans job discrimination against disabled if "reasonable accommodation" can be made. Requires access to facilities for handicapped.
National Voter Registration Bill ("Motor Voter Act") 1993 - Requires states to allow people to register to vote when applying for driver's licenses applications, or completing license renewal forms.
