Moses was a founder of Judaism. He led the Jews back to freedom in Canaan after they’d been slaves in Egypt for 400 years (they’d had to leave Canaan due to famine). This was called Exodus
On the way back, God made a covenant with Moses at Mount Sinai, setting out in detail what the Israelites had to do in return for being God’s chosen people
“Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.” (Exodus 19:5)
God gave the Torah to Moses. This included the mitzvot - the Ten Commandments plus many other laws. The Ten Commandments (the Decalogue) were written separately on stone tablets. Moses was also given an explanation of the Torah, known as the oral Torah, which was eventually written down in the Mishnah
The Israelites promised to “do everything the Lord has said” (Exodus 19:8)
Orthodox Jews believe the Torah came directly from God, but Reformed Jews believe the Torah is people’s interpretation of God’s word - they think it was written by people rather than God
