Chapter 10.2

  • Zygote: the fertilized egg; enters 2- weeks period of rapid cell division and develops into embryo

  • Embryo: the developing human organism form 2 weeks through the 2nd month

  • Fetus: the developing human organism from 9 weeks after conception to brith

Physical Growth: Define the following

  • Infancy: from birth to age 2

  • Childhood: from 2 year old to adolescents

  • Reflex: - an invoulunatry reaction or respons,

  • Some are essential to survival

Examples of reflexes:

  • Grasping: infants clinging response to a touch on the palm of their hand

  • Rooting:infants response in turning towards the source of touching anywhere around their mouth

  • Morrow: flinching when falling backwards

  • Babinski: foot fanning.

Answer the following questions using the Ch. 10:2 PDF and/or the slideshow.

  1. What is the difference between gross motor development and fine motor development?

Gross- Babies progress in coordinating major muscle groups-ex. Arms and legs

Fine motor- Babies progress in coordinating small muscle groups-ex hands and face

  1. In your own words, explain what the visual cliff experiment demonstrates about perceptual development?

To check whether small children (Crawling recently)have depth perception, the baby is not scared of the cliffs; this shows fears of innateness in children of small ages.

Crawling for a month(eights and half )- fear of height is developed, cannot cross

Turtles can do it.
Perception development- infants learn to make sense from sights, sounds, tastes etc

  • Eyesight not fully developed until 5-10 weeks

  • Prefer face patterns

  • Depth perception is learned around 9 months (visual cliff study)
