Amritsar Massacre

• Protest against British rule and unjust laws

• The British killed 379 Indians

• Happened because Indians did not know it was illegal to assemble.

• large-scale act of civil disobedience

• 60,000 people were arrested including Gandhi

• helped bring India closer to independence

Gandhi- in the Congress Party, pacifist and wanted to gain independence without violence

Indira Gandhi- Took over in 1966 after dad died, was against the Sikhs gaining independence, destroyed sacred part of Golden Temple + killed 500 Sikhs, was gunned down and killed by Sikh bodyguards

Sikhs- live mostly in Punjab, pray to Golden Temple
