Chapter 7 Notes (Andrew Jacksons Presidency)
Growth of Democracy
-1800-1840 it increased ^ in America
- Most men couldn’t vote due to property/tax restrictions that were in place.
-These restrictions were eventually removed (1840)
-New techniques for getting votes were made due to raise in voting ability.
-Expanded suffrage was a main idea (voting rights to all white men)
- President vetoed a lot of ideas (rejecting something proposed by a legislative branch)
Jacksons Presidency
-Jackson beat John Q Adams in the election
-Jackson greatly expanded power of president
-Made new political parties that departed from Jefferson’s beliefs (which he didn’t particularly align with)
- Now there’s a 2 party system (democrats aka pre Jacksonian time beliefs, and Whig aka Jacksons new followers)
-Who supported the Democratic party?: South and West, common men, and farmers
-Who supported the Whig Party?: North East, bankers & merchants
-Jackson signed Indian Removal Act, removed remaining Indians after Trail of Tears from the East . This choice caused many problems.
-Jackson used his power to veto more than most presidents for a long period of time.
-Jackson also used something called the spoils system, where he gave some of his supporters jobs. Even if said supporters weren’t always qualified for those jobs.
Nullification Crisis
-exposed sectionalism occurring in states + national gov
-This “crisis” was mainly caused by issue of tariffs.
-Nullification: states have right to ignore laws that they deem unfair (ignore)
-In 1833 a compromise tariff was created and the crisis was over.
Jacksons Views
-”Nullification was threat on US”
-Did not agree with Second Bank of US
