Chapter 3: understanding residents

  • Physiological needs- relate to the processes and activities that keep humans/animals alive. 

  • Psychological needs- involve social interaction, emotions, intellect, and spirituality. 

  • Holistic care- involves caring for the whole person- the mind as well as the body. 

  • Developmental disabilities- present at birth or emerge during childhood. 

  • Apathy- lack of interest in activities. 

  • Advance directives- legal documents that allow people to choose what medical care they wish to have if they are unable to make decisions themselves. 

  • Durable power of attorney for health care- a signed, dated, and witnessed legal document that appoints someone to make medical decisions for a person in the event they are unable to do so. 

  • Cheyne-stokes- alternating periods of slow, irregular breathing and rapid, shallow breathing, along with periods of not breathing. 

  • Palliative care- given to people who have serious disease or who are dying that emphasizes relieving pain, controlling symptoms, and preventing side effects.
