FS1 - Describe the distribution and characteristics of water in local and global environments and identify the significance of water supply and quality to the needs of humans and other living things.
FS1.1: How do we get water to survive and how much are we actually using?
97.2% of the worldâs water is saltwater (oceans), and 2.8% is freshwater (lakes, rivers, glaciers, etc.)
Only 0.8% is avaible for humans to use, and the rest is locked up in glaciers
10% is used for domestic purposes, 20% is used for industry, and 70% is used for agriculture
Freshwater is renewed through the water cycle
Run-off - flows over land as surface water and is not absorbed into the ground
Groundwater - hidden water that collects beneath the Earthâs surface
Hidden water is the amount of water that we donât think about when buying things (how much water is ACTUALLY being used to produce something)
FS1.2: How is water quality affected by human activities?
Transluscent:
Lets some light pass through it
Light is transmitted
Examples: Frosted glass, wax paper, cloudy water
Transparent:
Lets the most light through it
Light is transmitted
Examples: Window, seran wrap, clear plastic
Opaque:
Lets no light pass through it
Usually solid
Light is absorbed or reflected
Examples: Blackout curtains, concrete walls, doors, people
