AI Lecture Review

Introduction to AI

  • This course aims to provide a realistic view of AI and its impact on society.

  • It will cover how to use AI personally or within an organization.

  • The first week focuses on cutting through the hype and understanding what AI really is.

The Value of AI

  • AI is predicted to create significant value.

  • According to McKinsey Global Institute, AI could generate an additional 13 to 22 trillion US dollars annually by 2033.

  • Generative AI (producing text, images, audio) is expected to contribute 3 to 4 trillion dollars of this value.

  • Other forms of AI, like supervised learning, will contribute a larger portion.

  • The focus of the course is more on these mature AI technologies.

AI Across Industries

  • AI is already valuable in the software industry.

  • Future value lies outside software, in sectors like retail, travel, transportation, automotive, and manufacturing.

  • AI is expected to have a significant impact on almost every industry.

  • Even in areas like hairdressing, AI and robotics could potentially be applied (e.g., for simple hairstyles).

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)

  • A large amount of value today comes from ANI.

  • ANI refers to AIs that do one specific task, like smart speakers, self-driving cars, or AI in web search, farming, or factories.

  • These AIs are one-trick ponies, but can be valuable when applied appropriately.

Generative AI

  • With the rise of generative AI, we are starting to see AI as a bit more general purpose.

  • ChatGPT, for example, can be a copy editor, brainstorming partner, and text summarizer.

  • These models have been an exciting development and are expanding what we can now do with AI.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

  • AI also refers to the concept of AGI.

  • AGI is the goal of building AI that can perform any intellectual task that a human can.

  • It could even be super-intelligent and do more than any human can.

  • While there is progress in ANI and generative AI, we are still far from achieving AGI.

  • The progress in ANI and generative AI has led to some overblown fears about evil sentient robots taking over humanity.

  • AGI is an exciting goal for researchers, but it will take multiple technological breakthroughs and may be decades or even hundreds of years away.

  • Given how far away AGI is, there is no need to undo the anxiety about it.

Course Overview

  • This week, you'll learn what ANI can do and how to apply it to your problems.

  • Later, you'll see case studies of how ANI can be used to build valuable applications like smart speakers and self-driving cars.

Week 1 Topics

  • What is AI?

  • What is machine learning (covered in the next video)?

  • What is data, including valuable and not valuable types of data?

  • What makes a company an AI company or AI-first company?

  • What machine learning can and cannot do (including seeing both success and failure stories).

  • Intuitive explanation of deep learning/neural networks (in optional videos).

Week 2 Topics

  • How AI technologies can be used to build valuable projects.

  • What it feels like to build an AI project.

  • How to select projects that are technically feasible and valuable.

Week 3 Topics

  • How to build AI in your company.

  • The AI transformation playbook.

  • How to build AI teams and complex AI products.

Week 4 Topics

  • How AI systems can be biased and how to diminish or eliminate such biases.

  • How AI is affecting developing economies.

  • How AI is affecting jobs.

  • How to navigate the rise of AI for yourself and your organization.

Course Goal

  • By the end of the course, you will be more knowledgeable about AI technology and better able to navigate its rise.

  • After this course, you will be in a position to provide leadership to others as well as they navigate these issues.

Next Steps

  • The next video will cover the topic of what machine learning is.
