Ch.3

3.4: Avogadro’s Number and the Mole

Mole is the amount of matter contained

Avogadro’s number is 6.02 × 10^23 which is the amount of matter in one mole of a substance

  • 1 mole of oxygen has 6.02 × 10^23 particles

Analogy: Avogadro’s number is like a dozen a dozen of eggs or a dozen of elephants both have 12 units of matter, however the mass of one dozen of elephants and egg is not the same. The dozen represents Avogadro’s number and the mass represents molar mass

Different substances have different molar mass (mass in grams of one mole of a particular substance)
