Discussion on the in-person hands-on session (ACU1) with Mary over the long weekend.
The instructor expresses sympathy for students who had class over the long weekend.
The instructor mentions enjoying the in-person classes for solidifying the material.
A student's bird makes an appearance, amusing the class.
Urinary Bladder (UB) Channel Overview
The UB channel is similar to the Du channel but lateral to it.
In-person practice will involve palpating the spine to locate points.
Class notes are available on Google Drive, but tables from Mary will be uploaded later after obtaining her permission.
Questions about Ren and Du channels are addressed.
Specific Points and Channel Pathways
Lung channel will be covered soon, introducing specific points and their nature.
The UB channel includes back-shu points and points along the limbs like Xi-cleft, Luo-connecting, and Five Shu points.
Multiple pathways will be discussed: primary, sinew, Luo, divergent, and deep branches.
The lung channel is simpler with only 11 points compared to UB's 67.
UB Channel Characteristics
The UB channel is a yang pathway.
Qi flows from the small intestine channel to the urinary bladder channel.
It is a foot pathway starting on the face, running down the back, and ending on the foot.
It is a Tai Yang pathway, meaning it is a posterior outer pathway.
The pathway is divided into head/face, back/trunk, and leg portions.
Solid lines with dots indicate the primary pathway used for needling.
Dotted lines indicate deeper branches connecting to organs or other channels.
UB Channel Pathway: Head and Face
The pathway originates at the inner canthus (UB1) between the eyeball and orbit.
It ascends to the head, utilizing the "chin measurement" technique.
The pathway connects to Du24.
UB2 (eyebrow point) has a deep branch connecting to Du24 and Du20.
The Pathway descends to the ears, connecting to GB points around the ear region.
The main pathway ascends midway between Du24 and UB4.
Points UB4, UB5, UB6, UB7, and UB8 are 1.5 cun from the midline, running parallel to the Du channel.
UB Channel Pathway: Back and Trunk
The pathway continues posteriorly to the nape of the neck.
A deep branch reconnects here, and the channel splits into two branches descending along the back. The first branch goes from UB11 to UB34.
The second branch makes a lateral path of UB, goes from 41 to 54, and then continues at the back of the thigh.
The urinary bladder pathway runs down the back: one runs 1.5 cun lateral to the midline and one runs 3 cun lateral to the midline.
UB Channel Pathway: Leg and Foot
The channel zigzags down the back of the thigh.
It continues down the back of the leg to UB60 at the ankle joint.
It follows the lateral aspect of the foot to terminate at UB67 on the little toe.
A deep branch connects to the kidneys and urinary bladder.
Summary of Pathway Connections
Originates at the inner canthus, ascends to the anterior hairline, connects with DU20, DU24, and GB15.
Goes posteriorly to connect to DU20, continues back to DU16 and DU17.
A connection branches down, surrounding the ear and connecting to GB7 through GB12 points.
Enters the brain and connects out to come down the back.
Deep connections to kidneys and urinary bladder.
Detailed Pathway Description
Begins at the inner canthus of the eye, Jingming (UB1), and ascends along the forehead to the vertex, intersecting with GB15, DU24, and DU20.
A deep branch from the vertex descends to the temples around the ear, intersecting the gallbladder channel points at GB7, GB8, GB9, GB10, GB11, and GB12.
From the vertex, a branch enters the brain, meets with the Du channel, and emerges at the nape of the neck where it splits into two branches.
Medial Branch
Descends along the posterior aspect of the neck, intersects with D14 and D13, and descends alongside the spine 1.5 cun lateral to the midline to the lumbar region.
Penetrates deep into the interior via the paravertebral muscles and connects to the kidneys and bladder.
A sub-branch separates at the lumbar region, descends along the sacrum, crosses the buttocks, and descends to the popliteal fossa at UB40.
Lateral Branch
Separates at the nape of the neck and descends on the medial border of the scapula, 3 cun lateral to the midline.
Descends to the glutes where it intersects with GB30 in the buttocks region, and then continues down and reconnects with the channel at UV40 as it continues down the back of the lower leg.
Descends through the gastroc muscle, emerges posterior to the lateral malleolus at UB60, and follows along the fifth metatarsal to terminate at UB67 at the tip of the fifth toe where the kidney channel originates.
Intersecting and Meeting Points
Connects with the kidneys, its interior/exteriorly related organ, and the bladder, its pertaining organ.
Meeting points include DU20, DU24, GB15, GB7-12, GB17, GB14, GB13.
Overlaps with pathways from LI channel, SI and GV.
Luo-Connecting Channel
Connects the UB channel to the kidney channel (interiorly/exteriorly related).
The Luo-connecting point for UB is Feiyang (UB58).
The Luo extends medially to connect with the kidney channel.
Divergent Channel
Deeper connections that link the interior and exterior relationships in a more profound way.
This connects to the urinary bladder channel and also affects divergent channels.
Diverges from the primary channel in the back of the knee (popliteal fossa).
Goes up to the sacrum, around the anus, connects to the bladder, disperses into the kidneys, ascends along the spine, disperses into the cardiac region, and emerges at the back of the neck where it reconnects to its primary channel.
Sinew Channel
Think of covering the muscular level.
Physical pathway affecting movement.
Starts at the tips of the toes and covers the muscular level.
For the urinary bladder, think of the gastroc muscles, Achilles tendon, lateral side of the foot, back of the knee, and back of the thigh where the hamstrings are.
Binds at the ankle joint, heel, lateral angle of the knee, gastroc, back of the thigh into the sacrum, sacroiliac joint, and buttocks.
Spreads under the axilla, over the top of the shoulder, over the top of the neck shoulder connection at the back of the head at the occiput; surrounds the eye.
Channel Connections
Primary Channel: Connects with kidneys (its interior/exteriorly related organ) and bladder (its pertaining organ).
Bladder stores fluid and helps transform it for excretion.
Bladder channel points may not directly treat bladder organ or food.
Back-shoe points of San Jiao, kidneys, or bladder help with bladder function.
Points on the lower limb also help.
Actions of the Points
Eliminate both types of wind, exterior invasion, and interior wind.
Bladder channel points have a great range of actions and indication due to its length and different regions it goes across.
Taiyang bladder channel has 67 points and is the longest channel in the body; ascends over the head. Taiyang is seen as the most superficial of the six channels (first one attacked by wind).
Can also be seen to treat more psychomotional disorders because it enters the brain (diverging channel connects with the heart, impacting a shed).
Bladder channels can treat more psychomotional disorders that can then be either local on the head, from UB1 to UB10, or on the foot (opposite end). There are also certain back-shoe points that can be used: bladder for grief, heart (anemia or anxiety), liver for anger and irritation.
UB1 to 10 Treats any disorder of the head, face, eyes, nose, and ears. Points from UB60 to 67 also treat that, but we're talking more local. Points great to pacify anterior wind.
UB 11 Bone influential points in treat bone diseases all the way to UB 28 (back pain of bladder) to treat different areas of the body and substance. Points on the upper back do, again, that invasion. So not wearing a scarf or just wind. So regulate the lungs; points UB14 or 15 will have the affinity for heart and spirit because it's paracardium and heart points. Points u17 to 22 will help treat middle jowl because it represents the organs in the middle jowl.
Points on that outer lateral bladder channel (three trinlatural) not used very often represent the emotions. 1. 5 line used often. 1. 5 chin is treating actual organs, such as spirit and emotions.
Points are named according to their spiritual aspects of Poe shan Han II zi. These are points that are used, and can be used to treat psychomental. UB channel, for head because fund in the head bank points are also helps in tonifying deficiency.
