Geographic Relationships between States and Nations Definitions

  1. Stateless Nation: A national group that is spread throughout two or more countries and is not the majority in any of those countries.

  2. Nation‐State: A national group whose national/ethnic borders are nearly identical to the borders of the country in which they reside.

  3. Bi‐national State: A single country that is home to two distinct nations/national groups.

  4. Multi‐state Nation: A national group that is spread throughout two or more countries and is the majority in one or more of those countries.

  5. Multi‐national State: A single country that has two or more national groups residing within its borders.

  6. Irredentism: A national group controls one country while also seeking control of an adjacent area of a second country.

  7. Ethnic Enclave: A small distinct region where a national group resides inside a state surrounded by a much larger national group.

  8. Ethnic Exclave: A national group that not only controls its own country but also has members clustered into areas of other countries.
