- Set precedents of two term limit, inaugural address, creation of a cabinet.
- Debate emerged over National Bank and payment of debts. Was settled by putting Capital (Washington D.C.) in the South.(PUT DC IN SOUTH)
- Put down the Whiskey Rebellion and proved the strength of the Govt. and Constitution.
- Proclaimed neutrality in all foreign issues.
- Farewell Address predicted problems with North/South, political parties, and asked for neutrality in the future.

Louisiana Purchase
- Jefferson purchased territory for $15 million from France.
- Opposed by the Federalists and was technically illegal, so Jefferson called it a treaty.
- The 13 states that came out of the Louisiana Purchase were; Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, South and North Dakota. Also parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Minnesota. At least knowing 6-7 should be good.
- Sent Lewis and Clark to investigate land.

- Embargo Act - outlawed trade with foreign countries. Was later loosened to just Britain.

Key victory happened on Lake Erie, where Oliver Hazzard Perry defeated a fleet of British ships. This forced the British out of Detroit and gave the Americans control of Michigan back from the British.
Who burned D.C? Who was credited with saving important documents?
The British attacked and burned Washington D.C. Among buildings burned were the White House and the Capitol. Dolley Madison is credited with saving important documents, including an original copy of the Declaration of Independence.

Treaty of Ghent – ended the War of 1812. Restored boundaries to their origins.
