networks

a network is a collection of computers and other devices that are connected via cable or wirelessly known as the communication media allows us to communicate and share hardware and software and data and information

the internet is a global network that consists of many different networks connected to each other

advantages of networks:

Fast and efficient communication

  • using computers or phones connected to a network makes communication easy because there are many forms of digital communication

  • examples: school environment use emails instant messages like WhatsApp social networks like Instagram

Sharing of hardware

  • equipment can be shared by users on the same network which is cheaper than buying a device for each computer

  • you can print form anywhere using your smartphone connected to the network

Sharing of files

  • files on a server can be accessed by learners and teachers can retrieve learner’s files

  • files can be saved on the clous which is a computer connected to the internet

centralisation of data

  • networking allows us to access files or folders on a central computer

  • data is stored on a database that can be accessed so changes made to the data is immediate and available to users but conflicting changes are not made

flexible access

  • not limited to the physical location of computers

  • using internet removes location specific limit of a network

  • using cloud storage to save and sync files like on one drive

  • internet banking done at home

leisure

  • radio video and television streamed online

  • e-books newspapers and magazines downloaded

  • online gaming allows you to play against people world wide

Increased control and security

  • you can control access to data by access rights being set up by administrator therefore no unauthorized access

  • data centrally stored is easier to backup'

  • maintain integrity of data by updates being done in one place

  • easier to send updates from one central computer

disadvantages of having a network

  • people have to learn how to protect their privacy and information when going online

  • expensive to set up and maintain certain types of networks like the cost of an administrator

  • confidential or sensitive information may be leaked or stolen if not secured properly

  • harmful software can spread quickly

  • if network develops a problem user may not be able to communicate properly

  • central fault in the network can cause loss of data
