Cardiorespiratory disease pigs

Cardiorespiratory disease:

Approach to respiratory disease

History

§ What type of pigs? Finishers? Breeders? Piglets?

§ Scale of farm?

§ How many pigs affected?

§ What aged pigs affected? – piglets with GI signs, ill thrift = PRRS, aged 4-8w, thin = GPS

§ What clinical signs have they noticed?

o  Increased respiratory effort?

o  Cough? GPS

o  Nasal discharge?

§ Any other clinical signs? E.g. scour, weight loss – rapid weight loss = GPS, neuro signs = GPS

§ Any deaths? – GPS

§ Any abortions? - PRRS

§ Any recent changes in diet or management?

§ Vaccination protocol?

Investigations

Assess farm:

§ Sufficient space, access to feed, bedding?

§ Clean and fresh water supply?

Clinical examination of affected animals:

§ TPR – incr. HR and RR in pale piglets = iron deficiency, pyrexic = GPS

§ CRT/MM to assess hydration

§ BCS – no rib fat covering = GPS

Take samples:

§ Swab and fresh lung/heart tissue for culture – GPS

§ Preserved lung and heart tissue for histopathology – GPS, SIV, PRRS, PCV-2

§ Fresh lung tissue for PCR – SIV, PRRS, mycoplasma hyorhinis

§ Fresh spleen tissue for PCR – PRRS

Treatment

§ Antibiotics – amoxicillin, penicillin

§ NSAIDs (meloxicam), or dexamethasone – anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic

Porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC)

Pathogens

Combination of pathogens:

§ Viral: PRRS, SIV, PCV-2

§ Bacterial – Glaesserella parasius (GPS), Mycoplasma hyopnuemoniae, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, Streptococcus suis, Pasteurella multicoda, Actionobacillus pleuropnumonia

Clinical signs

§ Coughing

§ Anorexia, weight loss

§ Lethargy

§ Increased hair growth

§ Increased respiratory effort

§ Increased mortality

Diagnostics

Herd sampling:

§ ELISA of blood or oral fluids

§ PCR of blood, oral fluids or nasal/tonsillar swabs

PM sampling:

§ Look at lung tissue – consolidation? Fading? Pneumonia?

§ PCR of tissue, flood, BAL, swab

§ Culture of tissue or swab

§ Histopathology

PRRS

§ Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome

Control:

§ Only buy in PRRS negative animals

§ If animals test PRRS positive – isolate and vaccinate, don’t serve gilts till >6w post-infection

§ Monitor positive herd with PCR – oral fluid, blood, spleen, lung

Heart disease

Causes

§ Endocarditis – erysipelas

§ Pericarditis – GPS

§ Myocarditis – FMD, SVD
