Study of Life Vocabulary

Homeostasis: Internal stability. Ex: Body temperature, blood pressure

Science Inquiry: Planned investigation of the natural world.

Hypothesis: Testable explanation of a situation.

Pseudoscience: Areas of study that imitate science; not supported by science. Ex: Astrology

Atoms, Elements, Compounds

Atoms: made of protons, neutrons, and electrons Protons- Positive, Neutron- Neutral, Electrons- Evil (negative)

Elements: Pure substance; cannot be broken.

Periods= Rows. Groups= Columns.

Isotopes: Same element, different number of neutrons. They are identified by: protons+neutrons. RADIOACTIVE

Compounds: Two or more elements together. Ex: Water (h2o)

Chemical Bonds: Force that holds substances together. Involves electrons.

Molecules: Compound where molecules are held by covalent bonds.

Types of Chemical Bonds:

Covalent: Formed when atoms share 2 or more electrons.

Ionic: Formed when atoms share 1 electrons.
