Function Domain, Range, and Graphical Interpretation Notes

Domain and Range of Functions

Understanding Domain and Range: An Introduction

  • Domain: The set of all possible input values (x-values) for which a function is defined.
  • Range: The set of all possible output values (y-values) that a function can produce.
  • The domain and range provide a strong indication of what a graph will look like.

Domain and Range of f(x) = x^2

Domain

  • For the function f(x) = x^2, any real number can be plugged in for x and squared.
  • This means the entire number line is included in the domain.
  • Interval Notation: (- rac{\infty}{,} rac{\infty}{}).
  • Alternative Notation: A fancy '\mathbb{R}' symbol is sometimes used to denote
